Discovering the 4D Method™
In Chapter 12 of Derrick’s book I Am Masterpiece he explores the questions, “How healthy am I?” It's a reminder that whether we're steering a business or team, managing a family, or simply trying to lead a fulfilling life, our physical, mental, financial, and relational development plays a critical role in our overall success. Like the finely tuned athletes in Formula One racing, our success and ability to reach our goals are closely tied to how well we take care of ourselves. To lead effectively, we need to be in our best shape, ready for the race of life.
“Do you not know that in a race, all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” 1 Corinthians 9:24 (NIV)
The Four Dimensions of Development for Healthy Living — The 4D METHOD
The 4D Method is used just like the information that you get from a doctor when you go for your annual physical. The medical world will tell you time and time again that with the early diagnosis of any disease, the hope of arresting the disease or eradicating the disease increases exponentially when detected early. Considering the 4D Method below, which area of your health do you think needs the most attention right now and why?
1st Dimension: M.E.C. Health - Mental, Emotional, and Cognitive Health
We commonly use the word head to describe the place of greatest influence: the head of a corporation, the head of the house, the head of a hammer. The mind is where we must begin, the place where your thoughts are incubated, considered, debated, and chewed. Anything that happens in your life starts with a choice, a decision, and that is ignited in your head. The importance of a healthy mind cannot be understated. Your brain is not a muscle; it's an organ, one that actually plays a huge role in controlling muscles throughout your body.
From personal experiences and adopting certain principles, we have seen dramatic lifelong changes by practically implementing certain practices that sharpen our skills, talents, and abilities in the areas of Mental health, Emotional health and Cognitive health. In Chapter 12 Derrick reveals how to consistently influence and even enhance M.E.C. health to make something better of our lives.
2nd Dimension: Physical Health
Derrick explores three areas (Exercise, Nutrition, Maintenance) that are vital to your overall well-being. We don’t expect that you’ll become a gym rat living in your local fitness center. But we do believe that to get the most out of your life; there will have to be some investment in your body.
Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. It can improve brain health, help manage weight, reduce the risk of disease, strengthen bones and muscles, and improve your ability to do everyday activities. Not getting enough physical activity can lead to heart disease, even for people who have no other risk factors. Derrick walks you through formulas for each of these three elements of physical health. Body care should be an experience that brings you peace, enjoyment, and relaxation.
3rd Dimension: Financial Health - How to Rightly View Money
Let's learn how to use money properly and make it work for us instead of chasing it. Learning how to see our finances as only tools is critical to a healthy life. If we become too emotionally attached to it, we are more likely to make a mistake and be led astray by never-ending forms of money-making propositions. Proper perspective is important here, as it helps us sort out all the confusion about our finances.
Sadly, it's believed that if we have enough money, all our worries and troubles will go away. The problem is that the most valuable things in life that money can't buy are: time, fulfillment, inner peace, integrity, true love, character, manners, a cancer-free body, respect, morals, trust, patience, class, or common sense. Derrick lays out an outline to help you define your financial health blueprint in five areas: Earning, giving, saving, investing, consuming.
4th Dimension: Relational Health
This dimension is divided into three separate subsections: Spiritual health, social health, recreational health. Spiritual health is your connection to God. One of the best indicators of your general well-being is your behavior and acceptance when you interact with other people. Your work relationships, family, friends, community, and even random providential people all contribute to your social health.
Recreation should be fun — something that is amusing, something that's enjoyable; it makes you laugh when you do it; you feel good inside. It’s a natural stress reliever; it can get your mind off the dumb stuff in life. You’ll find it has a way of recharging your batteries.
